The play, in essence, deals with a forty-year period in the life of one family, from 1940 - 1987 concentrating on the female side of the family through four generations, but with echoes going back much further than this. Above all else it is a play about mothers, and their relationships with their daughters, and how, with each generation, a new set of challenges presents itself. It is assumed that we learn from our experience, and that our personal history equips us to deal with a similar situation in the next generation - but 'similar' isn't enough; there are too may new, strange and unfamiliar twists to our relationships as we move on from one generation to the next. Assumptions are different, expectations are greater, as a mother accommodates the growing up of her daughter.
