Drama at Dauntsey's

"Sweeney Todd"

Book by: Hugh Wheeler, Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Date: December 2003

Venue: Memorial Hall

Stephen Sondheim’s dark musical is hugely challenging for actors and musicians, and proved a fine vehicle for the wealth of talent among the senior pupils in the school.

There were excellent individual performances in principal roles from Chris Jones, Maria Trkulja, Simon Blackford and many others, but the crowd scenes were also superbly performed. Movement techniques such as freeze frames and slow motion in the chorus were used to point up significant dramatic moments.

The stark stone-effect set was designed to amplify shadows thrown up by the lighting, and strong colour was used in the lighting design for symbolic and atmospheric effect.
