By Jean Betts
Date: October 2006
Venue: Annabel's Studio
Teeming with literary allusions, complex plots, Shakespearean mad characters and a hearty dose of feminism, Ophelia Thinks Harder by Jean Betts was a challenging but successful choice for the first time director, Ananth Gopal. Significantly, Ophelia was the first play to be performed in Annabel’s studio. With a bare white box set and a largely minimal approach to production, it was a perfect opportunity for the very able cast to explore their roles and interactions. Cordelia O’Neill effectively portrayed Ophelia’s search for meaning and love in a chauvinistic world and Sam Paine showed great comic timing and understated class in his role as Horatio. Annabel’s came alive with packed seats, proving how important this intimate performance venue is to Dauntsey's’s.
