Drama at Dauntsey's

"Blood Brothers"

By Willy Russell

Date: December 2004

Venue: Memorial Hall

Our most recent whole-school production, Blood Brothers saw Dauntsey's pushing the boundaries yet again. This time, to add to technical innovations in recent years such as programmable moving lights, we added a revolving stage and fully automated programmable sound mixing.

However, at the core of all Dauntsey's productions is the drama itself, and once again a highly skilled, slick and professional cast delivered a moving and dramatically charged rendition of this popular musical. It's a Liverpudlian West Side Story, "Blood Brothers" and is the story of twin brothers separated at birth because their mother cannot afford to keep them both. One of them is given away to wealthy Mrs Lyons and they grow up as friends in ignorance of their fraternity until the inevitable quarrel unleashes a blood-bath.

Again, Dauntsey's showed its strength not only in the accomplished playing of the leading roles, but in the energy, focus and skill of all the members of the chorus. The quality of the singing was universally high, as was the musicianship of the band, 70% of whom were also pupils in the school, augmented by a few professional players.
