Of all the years I have been at Dauntsey’s I have never once attended the Ronnie Scott’s jazz night so did not know what to expect when faced last week of using our new platform system to create a stage set up for the jazz event. Getting any sort of staging system to fit between the elegant columns without wasting any floor space was interesting to say the least and there was definitely no room for lighting stands! The solution was to hire in from our friends at Enlightened Lighting a couple of smaller platform pieces to fit round the columns and two truss goal posts connected by a smaller barrel square mounted on top. Power supply was also an issue so most of the lighting (again hired in) were LED pars and strip lights which we used for back/side lighting while a few par 56s made up the front lighting. As this was all very last minute I must thank Mr Mayland in the Maintenance department who generously went half on the cost of hiring in for this event.

As always I am indebited to my Tech Crew who this time consisted of Odin & Will who did an outstanding job of assisting getting it all up, running the lights and then taking it back down in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

>Last Friday the team assembled to suspend a model DC3 airplane which had been constructed by Karl from the Manor. Orignally built for the this year’s Summer Ball the airplane had been lovingly repaired by Karl (it had suffered a couple of nasty knocks on the hasty get out) over the summer. Karl also took the oppotunity to improve the detail on various parts of the plane which he had been unable to do leading up to the Summer Ball.

At 8am it was loaded up on the school van down at the Manor and brought up to the Science Block which was to be its new home. Something spectacular was needed to fill the spacious glass walled space which makes up the foyer of the Science Block and the model DC3 was perfect for the job.

By 9.30 the space was prepared; the whole foyer was closed off to staff and students for the morning and a scaffold tower erected to allow the plane to be fixed to the ceiling.

10 o’clock and the plane had been reassembled by Karl, James and Odin.

I have to say the installation went a lot easier then I was exepecting and it was a very enjoyable job. The plane does look very dynamic in the space and realy adds interest to the foyer. Thanks also to James in maintenance and Dodge in Facilities who both helped getting everything into place.
